Frugal Friday - Homemade Laundry Detergent

With a new baby I'm always looking for ways to save us money. I saw this post about making your own laundry detergent and had to try it. This recipe makes about 4 gallons or so and is safe for babies! I made my first batch not long before Landon was born and I'm already on my second batch (Landon is a big spitter upper*)! It has worked wonderfully. I just make sure to pre-treat everything (as I did before) and I seriously cannot tell the difference. All you need is some Borax, Arm & Hammer Washing soda, and a bar of soap. All of this cost me about $5.00 and will make several 4 gallon batches. It is so easy to make, took me maybe a total of 20 minutes. Anyway, give it a try if you haven't. I think you'll be pleased with the outcome.

Just to forewarn you, the textures can be so different. The first time, I used homemade soap and it turned out like soapy water. This last time I used some random bar I had that smelled good and the texture is more of a goop. They both have worked great though.

*Watch out Seth, he's about to get ya!

I never thought of that before, making my own laundry detergent. I have a friend who made her own baby wipes before, and I know she would totally love this idea! I'll have to tell her about it. I went to that website with the instructions, it looked like he had some pretty impressive results as well! So basically it ends up smelling like the bar of soap that you use?

that's awesome Marcie! :) great way to creatively save money!

On an unrelated note...we just hired a guy from Michigan named Carl. Your married name came up in conversation yesterday and I discovered that he is your husband's uncle! haha. Do you know who I'm talking about?

Also... Landon is such a sweetie. :)

Marcie, I made my first batch of laundry detergent today. I get to check it out around 1 tomorrow. Thanks for the great idea. It is so inexpensive to make compared to store bought stuff. Amy S
